Undressed

I woke with a half-formed planned swimming around my head, but found myself unable to put it into action when I struggled to sit up, fighting off a yawn, and saw that all five of the masters were still there. They were already dressed, Vidrol and Andel seated at the small table by the doors to the balcony, picking at a breakfast spread. Helki and Vale were in the armchairs by the fire, both of them cleaning weapons. Fjor sat on the edge of the bed, methodically sharpening and polishing his blades before laying them in neat little rows.

Cecil and Elin were carrying in even more food, while Hette emerged from my dressing room, clothing folded over her arm.

“Queen Tempest!” she exclaimed, seeing me sitting up. “You’re awake.”

“It was bound to happen eventually,” I said, wondering why she looked like she had been caught doing something illegal. “And you can just call me Tempest.”

She shared a look with the other attendants, who each had the same wide-eyed expression, and then she was motioning me from the bed.

“Please, Tempest.” She motioned a little harder, when I just sat there staring at her. “I must ready you for the day ahead. A presentable queen is an acceptable queen.”

I burst out laughing, looking over at Vidrol. “Seriously?” I asked. “Those are your words, aren’t they?”

He lifted a cup from the table, steam curling up to tease his lips. “Is it my fault my little queen always looks like a complete savage?”

“Shall we tally it up?” I stepped out of bed, and Hette immediately tugged me towards the washroom. “Because I’m sure you’re to blame for more than you give yourself credit for.”

“We can do the math after you’ve taken those abominable underclothes off and covered that sweet ass up in enough silk that these depraved reprobates will need to hunt through a hundred layers to stare at you the way they are now.”

I pulled up short before I was tugged from the room, glaring at Vidrol over my shoulder. “Maybe I’ll go and show my sweet ass to a nice young steward man. What do you think? He’ll appreciate my underclothes, at least.”

The attendants gasped dramatically, but Vidrol only sipped his drink, his eyes fixed to my butt. “Why couldn’t I promise her a spanking as a wedding gift?” he asked nobody in particular.

“That reminds me.” I turned fully, forcing his eyes to snap back up to my face. “Where’s Goat?”

“In the pen behind your estate’s kitchen.” Vidrol cocked an arrogant brow at me. “Marked for slaughter.”

With a grumble of annoyance, I walked into the dressing room and quickly pulled on my training attire, ignoring Hette’s nervous tittering as she tried offering me a sectorian dress instead. I stepped into my boots, shoved my hair over my shoulders, and stormed back into the room.

“You all remember that I’m a weak mortal, and I was hysterical last night for no reason?” I asked, planting my hands on my hips.

“The reason seemed clear—” Helki began, but I picked up a roll of bread from the table and hurled it at his head.
